Abstract:From comparing the residential settlement patterns,economic structures,water management patterns and power radius in different regions,this paper discusses the formation mechanism of rural social order in Hubei and Hunan provinces during the Ming-Qing Dynasty.The patterns of rural residential settlement were decided by the environment and economic structures. The rural public sphere was delimited by the water management patterns and governance type. The economic structures and water management patterns were the adaptation of human being to the environment.The residential settlement patterns and the radius of power were the result of historical selection.
