Abstract：Although the least-squares method is well familiar to everyone, there will be many different expressions playing different roles when we use the method to treat problems in the different fields with different concepts and mathematical tools. This paper is in an attempt to give a unified and a general discussion on the method from the viewpoint of discrete data, continuous function, vector and matrix.
