Abstract:Upland cotton(Gossypium hirsutum) is one of the most important fiber crops for the textile industry in the world.Cotton fibers are the differentiated epidermal cells originated from the outer integuments of the ovule. To identify genes involved in cotton fiber development,we isolated and characterized 186 cotton cell wall structure protein genes from cotton cDNA libraries. These genes can be classified into three groups: Proline-rich cell wall proteins(PRP),Extensins(or Hydroxyproline-rich glycoprotein,HRGP),Glycine-rich proteins(GRP).To identify the fiber-specific genes,cDNA microarray was performed by using cDNAs from total RNAs in 10 DPA(days post anthesis) fibers of the wild-type cotton and in 10 DPA ovules of the fuzzless-lintless(fl) mutant as probes. The experiment results showed that,of the total 186 genes,7 genes are preferentially expressed in fiber.
