Abstract:In this work, water soluble chitosan was successfully modified with water as the plasticizer and polyurethane prepolymer (PUP) as the modifier by solid state reaction in an intensive mixer. The effects of PUP content on the structure/properties of the modified chitosan was investigated. The results showed that there was a strong interaction between PUP and chitosan. With the increasing PUP contents, the flexibility of modified chitosan increased while the adsorption property of modified chitosan decreased, suggesting that partial-NH2 groups of chitosan participated in the reaction. The obtained material is thermoplastic, thus can be directly used for film pressure or foaming, which highly expands the application of chitosan. This work provided a new method to prepare modified thermoplastic chitosan.
