Abstract：Land suitability evaluation, as a prerequisite in determining rational ways of land use, is very important in land resources planning and management. With the emerging and development of geographical information system (GIS), it becomes one of the important application fields of GIS. In GIS applications, grading by score is mainly used to determine the suitability level of a land against some kinds of usage. Its implementation includes three steps: (1) selection of evaluation factor; (2) evaluation of single factor; and (3) comprehensive evaluation of multi factors. Compared with traditional method by use of pure quantity, land suitability evaluation based on GIS may integrate the numeral calculation with graphical procession effectively, so as to raise the evaluation efficiency. This paper presents the case of agricultural land suitability evaluation in Jianli County by the use of GIS. It is shown that GIS can support the evaluation process effectively.
