Abstract：Making use of historical literature and present remote sensing data, this paper discusses the process of land exploitation in Jianghan plain and lake area in recent 500 years, divides the exploitation history in recent 500 years 7 phases, and expounds the characteristics of each period. It thinks that population increase, government policy and management, water conservancy influence land exploitation greatly and reclaiming land from lakes have influence upon the environment of the lake area. Through summarizing the historical reclamation experiences and lessons,it provides some suggestions on withdrawing farmland and returning lakes.
