Abstract:The largest area Sycopsis sinensis community, evergreen broad leaved forest, was found in Houhe National Nature Reserve, Hubei province, China. Spatial distribution pattern was studied. Individuals of Sycopsis sinensis of three plots were set respectively in plot coordinate and were sampled at random. Several indices were used to judge the distribution pattern in different sampling scales, such as Morisita index, Coefficient of distribution. Spatial distribution pattern varied with the scale of observation. Random distribution pattern was more often found. This is related to similar climate, habiat and the primitive characteristic of environments. Under the same climate and site condition, the heterogeneity of microenvironment resulting from the factors of soil, light, and different degree of rock cover significantly affected the scale of clumped distribution pattern in some smaller scales. As the dominant, the distribution of Sycopsis sinensis in community was affected by other tree species, especially by the broad leaved species. Humility and soil were the major factors determining the distribution pattern of Sycopsis sinensis population.
