Abstract：The paper has discussed the origin and classification of the lakes in Jianghan Plain and described the characteristics of each type of the lakes. It shows that the lakes are all concomitant of the revolution of Yangtze River, Han River and their branches, in other word, it is one impartible part of the eroded and deposited geomorphic formed by Yangtze River and Han River. The lakes can be divided into six types: interfluvial depression lakes; hill side lakes; piled up lakes; sink river valley lakes; yoke lakes; bank burst lakes. Since they were formed in the same physic geography background and affected by the similar inner and outer agencies, they have many common characteristics. For example, lake water is not deeper than 8 m; lake bottom is quite flat; bank line is unstable; lake sediment is quite thick and abundant of organic material.
