Abstract：Considering the local conditions in Hubei, a province in the middle reaches of Changjiang River, the authors probe into methods of assessment currently applied at home and abroad. On one hand, they state that the activities of human beings, especially urban expansion and population growth are in inverse proportion to the quality of regional environment. On the other hand, natural factors like geomorphic typologies and climate determine the scope of people's activities and their living conditions. Then the natural factors stimulating the environmental change also influence the quality of regional environment greatly.
