Abstract：85 sera from the residents with Giardia lamblia infections in Hubei province were investigated for the presence of anti-G. lamblia antibodies, using an ELISA with intact as well as sonicated trophozoites as antigen. The sera of twenty nine healthy adults were used as a control group. The humoral immune response was found to be age dependent. In the sera from patients below the age of 10 years, little significant antibodies were found. In adults, circulating IgG antibody was detected in 53.85%(35/65) of the sera and IgA antibody in 30.77%(20/65). Antibodies of either IgG or IgA classes were detected in 84.62% (55/65) of the sera from adults. Humoral IgG and IgA response occurred independently. The results show that the ELISA technique has limited value for diagnosis of giardiasis.
