Abstract：Dimethyl carbonate(DMC) is a versatile compound that represents an attractive eco-friendly alternative to both methyl halides(or dimethyl sulfate) and phosgene for methylation and carbonylation processes,respectively.DMC possesses properties of nontoxicity and biodegradability which makes it a true green reagent to use in syntheses that prevent pollution at the source.The advances in the green approaches to synthesize pesticides and pharmaceuticals and their intermediates,such as furazolidone,herbicidal sulfonamide,earbendozin,methyl(2,4-dichloro-5-fluorobenzoyl) acetate,carbaryl,isocyanates,using dimethyl carbonate to replace phosgene are reviewed here.
