Abstract：The paper mainly discusses the significance, basic condition and symbols of modern geography and the characteristics and task of Chinese geography.The author thinks the main conditions for the formation of modern geography are an investigated territory with obvious characteristics; a relatively developed economy and great effort by geographers.The 5 indications of the modern geography are as follows:1. the ability to solve geographical problems, put forward by economic reconstruction on a national scale;2. to reach an advanced level in comparison with other countries in the main fluids of geography;3. having large numbes of well known active geographers;4. high level of education in geography;5. popularization of geographical knowlede.The following 6 points are considered as characteristics of Chinese geography:1. a clear purpose is to serve socialist reconstruction;2. overall development of physical geography, human geograghy and cartography;3. cooperation between physical geography and economic geography;4. modernization of geography combined with attention to ancient and traditional geography;5. absorbtion of advanced geographical ideas and techniques from other countries;6. coexistence of the different schools of geographical thought.Recently there are 3 main tasks for Chinese geographers: to make great effort for the economic reconstruction of China; to raise the research level of geography; to increase the number of competent young geographers.
