Abstract：The on-the-spot investigation on the vertical distribution of small mammals was made at five various vertical and seven various habitats in the Shennongjia Forest Region of Hubei Province during 1986.It is shown as follows:1. The number of speies decrease as the altitude increase. The relative densities of species increase as the altitude increase.2. The composition of of species, relative densities and relative density of each species on the small mammals presented vertical variation in different vertical.3. The besi habitat for small mammals belongs to the mountain stream in the forest region.4. Based on the ecological distribution feature the small mammals can be divided into 2 ecological groups as follows. The ecological group to be closely related to forests and another one to be closely relatea to farming and residentia district.5. Apodemus d. draco Barrett-Hamilton, A. peninsulae Thomas, Nivienier nivienter confucianus Milne-Edwards, Anourosorex squamipes Milne-Edwards cad Ochotona thibetana Milne Edwards can live in manifold habitats.6. The distribution of small mammals is closely refuted to activities of humanity.
