Abstract：During the Ninth Five year Plan (1996-2000), the study on Chinese modern history still progresses in many fields and some valuable achievements have been made. But compared with that in the Seventh and the Eighth Five year Plan, the pace for a breakthrough in modern history has been slowed down, especially in its macro observation and the development of new fields and topics of the study. Therefore, a further development in modern history study still waits for pain taking efforts of the historians.
