Abstract:The Great Wall is the symbol of the Chinese nation. The Portuguese and Spanish were among the earliest merchants, missionaries and travellers who came to China from Europe. There are plenty of mentioning and descriptions about the Great Wall in their documentations about China, thus demonstrating a decisive significance for us to understand the valuation of the Great Wall by the Christian culture and the starting time in dissemination of the Great Wall in the Old World. This article compiles in detail the descriptions of the Great Wall in Iberian archives between the 16th and 17th centuries, and analyses the sources of references of several major historical works.
