Abstract：After the September 18th Incident,a group of liberalistic intellectuals such as Hu Shi,Ding Wen-jiang,Jiang Ting-fu etc.,who had ever studied abroad and at that time mainly worked in the northern universities,began to take part in the public affairs.They published a kind of journal named Independent Rreview until 1937.Based on the independent spirit and the rational consideration,they insisted that the invasion war must be extended and sooner or later there would be a war between China and Japan,as well as that the government should negotiate with Japan to a certain degree for more time used to strengthen himself while fighting with Japan,and that the different strengths should unite immediately.At the same time,they received troubles from different persons and groups.The Japanese government and people held hostile attitude towards Hu Shi and the journal,which perhaps reflected the meaning of the rational ideas and attitude.
