Abstract:Studying the spatio-temporal patterns of natural disasters is of great significance for natural disaster prevention. This study collected a detailed information on the frequency, the number of deaths and economic loss of natural disasters happened during 1900-2018 in regions along the Belt and Road. Firstly, the main types of disasters were obtained by collation and statistical analysis. Then the spatio-temporal patterns of disasters and their cause were analyzed. Results are shown as follows. 1) Floods is the devastating natural disasters in countries along the Belt and Road, followed by storms, droughts, earthquakes and epidemics. 2) The early 20th century was a period of frequent natural disasters. The frequency of disasters increased first and then decreased. The number of disaster deaths decreased greatly, and economic losses showed different growth. 3) Disasters occur most frequently in South Asia and Southeast Asia, and the main disasters are floods and storms. Disasters cause the greatest economic losses and the highest number of disaster deaths to China, and the main lethal disasters include epidemics, droughts and floods. The countries most affected by the disaster is Tajikistan. The absolute economic losses are small, but they account for the largest proportion of GDP. 4) The frequency of interdecadal disasters has obvious north-south differentiation, and the distribution of deaths is relatively concentrated. In recent years, the severely affected areas have shifted to the north.
